The Successful Applicant

VHA applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. A masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the masters degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED: If you do not submit the required document your application may not be reviewed.) Licensure/Certification: Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). In addition to meeting all basic requirements listed above for the entry level of this series the following must be met to qualify at the grade level shown below: SF50: If you are a current Federal employee you must submit SF50s that show you meet one year at the next lowest grade level as described below. If the most recent SF50 has an effective date within the past year it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one year at the next lowest grade level as required by the announcement. In this instance you must provide an additional SF50 that clearly demonstrates one year at the next lowest grade level. GS12 Grade Determination: At least one year of postMSW experience that is equivalent to the GS11 grade level and that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. Demonstrated Knowledge Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience above the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Ability to independently organize work set priorities and meet multiple deadlines. (b) Knowledge of supervisory duties which includes clinical supervision consultation negotiation with other departments and quality improvement. (c) Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services. (d) Ability to provide staff training and development. (e) Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees team leaders and managers. References: VA Handbook 5005/120 Part II Appendix G39 Physical Requirements: The physical demands of this position involve primarily walking sitting talking driving use of the telephone etc. Strenuous physical activity is not required although the incumbent is expected to withstand pressure and stress as part of their daytoday activities.
