The Successful Applicant
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: Must be proficient in both spoken and written English. Education: You must have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. You MUST submit a copy of your transcripts to be considered for this position. Licensure: You must possess a current permanent full and unrestricted license to independently practice social work at the masters degree level in a state District of Columbia the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico or a territory of the United States. You MUST upload a copy of your Social Work license to be considered for this position. Grade Determinations: GS11 Requirements:In addition to meeting the basic requirements applicants must: Possess one year of postMasters in Social Work (MSW) experience in the field of health care social work OR Have a doctoral degree in social work from the school of social work which may be substituted for the one year of professional experience in a clinical setting. In addition to the experience above you must demonstrate the following Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Knowledge of community resources how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services and ability to coordinate services. Ability to independently conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socioeconomic cultural ethnic educational and other diversified backgrounds. Knowledge of medical and mental health diagnoses disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries common medications and their effects/side effects and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. Ability to provide consultation services to new social workers social work graduate students and other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Preferred Experience: Treating individuals with substance use disorders (SUDs) and those with SUDs and comorbid mental health conditions. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/23 PART II APPENDIX G39. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS11. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS11. Physical Requirements: This position requires visual acuity keen hearing clear distinctive speech and manual dexterity. The incumbent must be a mature flexible sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations able to shift priorities based on patient needs and able to manage work activities in a highly technological integrated work environment.
