The Successful Applicant

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the masters degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. Current state requirements may be found on the OHRM website. English Language Proficiency. Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005 Part II chapter 3 section A paragraph 3j this part Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements for employment the following criteria must be met. Grade Requirements: You may qualify based on your experience or education as described below: GS14Experience/Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS13 grade level. The chief social work service must evidence possession of supervisory and management skills. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency skills and judgment. May have certification or other postmasters degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience. Licensure/Certification. The chief social worker must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Additionally you will be rated on the following Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Please make sure that each is addressed in your application package. Skill in providing the full range of supervisory duties across multiple service divisions/sections which would include responsibility for assignment of work to be performed performance evaluation selection of staff and recommendations of awards advancements and when appropriate disciplinary actions. Skill in applying legal ethical and professional standards to social work practice. Skill in developing maintaining and managing social work services in multiple divisions/sections. Ability to ensure compliance with social work practice policy and accreditation standards across the continuum of health care. Skill in providing consultation to facility leadership managers and other staff on social work qualification standards practice competency productivity and continuing education requirements Skill in administrative oversight to ensure compliance with social work licensure requirements. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 3540 hours of work per week. Parttime experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS14 to GS14. Physical Requirements: The work is sedentary. It occasionally requires carrying of light objects such as files books and papers. Some walking standing and bending is required. Physical qualifications require the ability to stand walk bend and move freely. Must be able to utilize good body mechanics in lifting or restraining patients. Must have good hearing eyesight and physical dexterity. Must be clean and neat in appearance. Must be emotionally stable and cooperative. Work is accomplished predominantly in the nursing unit and through escorting to various clinics or hospital areas. The physical surroundings involve working with the acute and chronically physically and mentally ill patients which may cause discomfort related to negative verbal and physical activities from these patients. The position also may require minimal travel into the community to meet with communityagencies and partners who provide assistance and support to the facility and its Veterans. This position may also deliver probate paperwork to various court systems in the local community for processing. This position also requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparingand analyzing data and figures transcribing viewing a computer terminal extensive reading and repetitive motions of the wrists hands and/or fingers.
