The Successful Applicant
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Psychologist Education: Please view the education section. Internships: (a) Have successfully completed a professional psychology internship training program that was accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program was completed and that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. OR (b) New VHA psychology internship programs that are in the process of applying for APA accreditation are acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement provided that such programs were sanctioned by the VHA Central Office Program Director for Psychology and the VHA Office of Academic Affiliations at the time that the individual was an intern OR (c) VHA facilities that offered fulltime oneyear predoctoral internships prior to PL 96151 (pre1979) are considered to be acceptable in fulfillment of the internship requirement OR (d) Applicants who completed an internship that was not accredited by APA or CPA at the time the program was completed may be considered eligible for hire only if they are currently board certified by the American Board of Professional Psychology in a specialty area that is consistent with the assignment for which the applicant is to be employed. (NOTE: Once board certified the employee is required to maintain board certification.) OR (e) Applicants who have a doctoral degree awarded between 1951 and 1978 from a regionallyaccredited institution with a dissertation primarily psychological in nature may fulfill this internship requirement by having the equivalent of a oneyear supervised internship experience in a site specifically acceptable to the candidates doctoral program. If the internship experience is not noted on the applicants official transcript the applicant must provide a statement from the doctoral program verifying that the equivalent of a oneyear supervised internship experience was completed in a site acceptable to the doctoral program. Licensure: Hold a full current and unrestricted license to practice psychology at the doctoral level in a State Territory or Commonwealth of the United States or the District of Columbia. Social Worker Education: Please view the education section. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social http://vaww.va.gov/OHRM/T38Hybrid. Grade Determinations: Psychologist Experience: In addition to the basic requirements candidates must have at least two years of experience as a professional psychologist with at least one year equivalent to the GS12 grade level. Candidates must demonstrate the following KSAs: 1. Ability to apply professional psychological treatments to the full range of patient populations.2. Ability to provide professional advice and consultation in areas related to professional psychology and behavioral health.3. Knowledge of clinical research literature Social Worker Experience and Licensure: Appointment to the GS11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of postMSW experience equivalent to the GS9 grade level in the field of health care or other social workrelated settings (VA or non VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. OR Education: In addition to meeting basic requirements a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. In addition to the licensure and basic education requirements the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Demonstrate proficient interviewing techniques and data collection methodology (e.g. engagement elements of history taking supportive techniques etc.) Demonstrates sensitivity to diversity and possesses multicultural counseling skills. Knowledge of community resources how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services and ability to coordinate services. Ability to provide individual therapy using measurementbased care with patientreported information to inform clinical care and shared decisionmaking to individual ongoing treatment. Provide problemsolving intervention and counseling with the Veteran family or caregiver concerning feelings about self health concerns and plans Assess crises and follow VA protocol and process for crisis intervention and suicide prevention. Skill in independently conducting psychosocial assessments and treatment interventions to a wide variety of individuals from various socioeconomic cultural ethnic educational and other diversified backgrounds. Knowledge of the Social Determinants of Health that may affect a wide range of health and quality of life risks and outcomes the implications on a Veterans wellness treatment implications stability and recovery. Knowledge of medical and DSM Diagnostic criteria and mental health diagnoses disabilities and treatment procedures (i.e. acute chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries common psychotropic medications and their effects/side effects and medical terminology) to formulate a treatment plan. Skill in independently implementing different treatment modalities in working with individuals families groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. Ability to provide consultation services to the multidisciplinary treatment team colleagues new social workers and social work interns graduate students and other about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care. References: VA Handbook 5005 Part II Appendix G18 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS13 for the Psychologist and GS11 for the Social Worker. Physical Requirements: Position requires walking throughout the clinic and/or Medical Center standing for extended periods of time and involves sitting at a computer and in counsel and consultation with Veterans and interdisciplinary teams. Position may require minimal travel into the community to meet with community agencies and partners who assist and support to the Syracuse VAMC its Veterans and caregivers. This position also requires close visual acuity to perform an activity such as: preparing and analyzing data and figures transcribing viewing a computer terminal extensive reading and repetitive motions of the wrists hands and/or fingers.
