The Successful Applicant

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. sect 7403(f). Education: Have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the masters degree in social work. Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. Grade Determinations: Social Worker GS9Experience and Licensure:Appointment to the GS9 grade level requires the minimum (Basic requirements) Language Education and Licensure and Experience with Standards in the field of health care or other social workrelated settings (VA or nonVA experience). This position is a part of the Social work Health Service and reports to the HBPC Supervisor and with the subsequent authority chain including Specialty Program Managers. However all social work duties at this level must also be under the close supervision of a social worker providing clinical supervision towards licensure. The social work service provides professional supports including peer review and practice consultation regarding social work standards and competencies. GS9 Social worker as defined in See VA Handbook 5005 Part II Appendix G39 Social Worker Qualification Standard GS0G0185 Veterans Health Administration. In addition to the experience above candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of community resources how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services and ability to coordinate services. Under supervision to assess the psychosocial functioning and needs of patients and their family members and to formulate and implement a treatment plan identifying the patients problems strengths weaknesses coping skills and assistance needed in collaboration with the patient family and interdisciplinary treatment team. Under supervision to conduct psychosocial assessments and provide psychosocial treatment to a wide variety of individuals from various socioeconomic cultural ethnic educational and other diversified backgrounds. This requires knowledge of human development and behavior (physical and psychological) and the differential influences of the environment society and culture. Under supervision reviews medical and mental health diagnoses disabilities and treatment procedures. This includes acute chronic and traumatic illnesses/injuries common medications and their effects/side effects and medical terminology. Under supervision of psychosocial treatments and ability to implement treatment modalities in working with individuals families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. This requires judgment and skill in utilizing supportive problem solving or crisis intervention techniques. Ability to provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals groups and families. Ability to provide consultation services to other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Ability to participate in the practice through participation in professional peer review case conferences research studies or other organized means. Grade Determinations: Social Worker GS11Experience and Licensure. Appointment to the GS11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of postMSW experience equivalent to the lower level GS9 grade in the field of health care or other social workrelated settings (VA or nonVA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. OR Education. In addition to meeting basic requirements a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. In addition to the experience above candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: Knowledge of community resources how to make appropriate referrals to community and other governmental agencies for services and ability to coordinate services. Knowledge of psychosocial treatment and ability to independently implement treatment modalities in working with individuals families and groups who are experiencing a variety of psychiatric medical and social problems to achieve treatment goals. This requires independent judgment and skill in utilizing supportive problem solving or crisis intervention techniques. Ability to independently provide counseling and/or psychotherapy services to individuals groups and families. Social workers must practice within the bounds of their license or certification. For example some states may require social workers providing psychotherapy to have a clinical level of licensure. Ability to provide consultation services to other staff about the psychosocial needs of patients and the impact of psychosocial problems on health care and compliance with treatment. Ability to provide orientation and coaching to new social workers and social work graduate students. Ability to serve as a field instructor for social work graduate students who are completing VHA field placements. Ability to independently evaluate his/her own practice through participation in professional peer review case conferences research studies or other organized means. Physical Requirements: The work is partly sedentary with infrequent driving. Typically the employee sits comfortably to perform the work. However there may be some walking standing bending carrying of light items such as papers books small parts or driving an automobile. No special physical demands are required to perform the work. Preferred Experience: In Home Based care responsibilities providing direct services for adult and geriatric veterans providing services both via telephone contact and in the homes of veterans. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS11.
