The Successful Applicant

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship. Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). Education. Have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the masters degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work. Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. (1) Exception. VHA may waive the licensure or certification requirement for persons who are otherwise qualified pending completion of state prerequisites for licensure/certification examinations. This exception only applies at the GS9 grade level. For the GS11 grade level and above the candidate must be licensed or certified. IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC REQUIREMENTS ABOVE YOU MUST MEET THE FOLLOWING GS12 GRADE REQUIREMENTS: GS12 Grade Requirements: Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS11 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Experience: Must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Program coordinators at the GS12 grade are administratively responsible for a clinical program providing treatment to patients in a major specialty. They may be the sole practitioner in this specialty at the facility and typically provide direct patient care services in the program area. They manage the daily operation of the program develop policies and procedures for program operation and prepare reports and statistics for facility VISN and national use. They may be responsible for the programs budget. Applicants must also meet the Demonstrated Knowledge Skills and Abilities listed below: 1. Indepth knowledge of the program coordinated and demonstrated knowledge and ability to write policies procedures and/or practice guidelines for the program. 2. Knowledge and skill in management/administration which includes supervision consultation negotiation and monitoring. 3. Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program. 4. Ability to organize work set priorities meet multiple deadlines and evaluate assigned program area(s). 5. Ability to provide training orientation consultation and guidance within clinical specialization of practice. Typical office work involves active listening reading observing and evaluating verbal and nonverbal behavior writing reports and clinical notes. The position requires the use of office equipment such as computers keyboards telephones fax machines and photocopy machines. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium dementia or psychiatric disorders. If required as a condition of employment the incumbent must complete annual Employee Health requirements such as annual TB screening or testing employee physicals etc
