The Successful Applicant

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Noncitizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education. Have a masters degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Licensure. Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS0185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the masters degree level. English Language Proficiency. Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). In addition to the basic requirements for employment the following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates. Social Worker GS11: Experience and Licensure. Appointment to the GS11 grade level requires completion of a minimum of one year of postMSW experience equivalent to the GS9 grade level in the field of health care or other social workrelated settings (VA or non VA experience) and licensure or certification in a state at the independent practice level. NOTE: For appointment licensure or certification at this level please refer to paragraph 3c. OR Education. In addition to meeting basic requirements a doctoral degree in social work from a school of social work may be substituted for the required one year of professional social work experience in a clinical setting. Demonstrated Knowledge Skills and Abilities. In addition to the experience above candidates must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: a) Ability to perform specialized treatment of complex physical and/or mental illness. b) Ability to provide advanced level case management interventions used in the treatment of Veterans with mental health diagnosis including but not limited to posttraumatic stress disorder addictions and other serious disorders. c) Ability to provide individual group and family psychotherapy used in the treatment of Veterans with mental health diagnosis including but not limited to posttraumatic stress disorder addictions and other serious disorders once under contract for licensure. d) Ability to develop and implement methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in specialty areas utilizing outcomes evaluations to improve treatment services. e) Ability to design changes based on empirical findings. f) Ability to provide consultation to colleagues and students on the biopsychosocial treatment of patients treated in specialty areas rendering professional opinions based on experience and expertise and role modeling effective social work practice skills. References: VA HANDBOOK 5005/120 PART II APPENDIX G Physical Requirements: Physical demands of the work are generally minor and are generally sedentary in nature but may require occasional travel. Physical activity involves sitting standing walking bending stooping climbing stairs and carrying light items such as papers books or other supplies. The incumbent uses a computer and standard office equipment to complete tasks. The emotional demands can be stressful in working with the Veteran/Patient population and their families/caregivers. A level of selfawareness is essential.
